KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP has objected to Umno Youth submit- ting
the names of students and lecturers allegedly involved in
campus politics to the Education Ministry as it claimed it
is tantamount to interference.
DAP
national publicity bureau secretary Gobind Singh Deo said
its regular allegation of lists and threats to expose both
lecturers and students for their involvement in political
activities at the campuses were an infringement of their fundamental
rights.
"Umno
Youth has no business making people feel that they are not
worthy if they support the opposition,'' he said in a statement.
Gobind
Singh was commenting on a move by Umno Youth to submit lists
of such lecturers and students.
Education
bureau chairman Dr Adham Baba said the list of lecturers had
been submitted to the Education Ministry together with a memorandum
while the student list would be next following the discovery
of eight university students for "spying'' at a Barisan
operations centre during the Indera Kayangan by-election.
Gobind
Singh said Umno Youth had no right to assume the role of caretakers
of the Government at university -level politics.
"There are lawful organisations in this country empowered
by law to investigate the matter,'' he said.
He also said that the Constitution provided additional safeguards
to persons who were being investigated and these were rights,
which should be respected.
"If
it has evidence, make it public and give those accused a chance
to defend themselves,'' he added.
